Hard Disk. This is the computer's permanent memory, in which all the documents, data, and programs are kept. We might say it is used as a storage bin. The hard disk (HD) is usually not visible from the outside of the computer (although many hard disk models are extractable like car radios). The size or capacity of the hard disk is measured in Gigabytes (GB = roughly one billion bytes). The currently-available models exceed 40 GB capacity, but larger and larger disks are continually being developed and marketed.
There are currently two hard disk technologies: EIDE (Enhanced-or Expanded-Integrated Drive Electronics) and SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface). The HD read/write rate is measured in milliseconds (ms = 0.001 s = one thousandth of one second).
