Modem. The modem is a device used for transmitting and receiving data over a telephone line, and in particular for connecting to the Internet. Modems can be external (connected to the computer via a cable) or internal (in the form of an expansion card). The rate at which the modem exchanges data is measured in kilobits per second (kbps = thousands of bits transferred in one second).
